What you may not realize is that a small puddle of water on the floor could indicate a deteriorated roof, walls, insulation, floors, and not to mention mold growth!

According to Michael Fahouris, owner of Certified Restoration Inc, "Insulation is like a sponge, it retains water and takes a very long time to dry out. Insulation's sponge-like qualities make it hard to see where the water is coming from although it is highly likely your walls are already wet."

Besides a completely deteriorated infrastructure, water leaks can also be dangerous. Water present anywhere near electrical wiring poses a potential threat of fire due to shorted wires. Another serious danger is related to you and your family's health as excessive moisture in the home can lead to mold and mildew growth.

According to the EPA, United States Environmental Protection Agency, standing water and wet materials are a breeding ground for microorganisms, such as viruses, bacteria and mold. They can cause disease, trigger allergic reactions and other respiratory problems. "Mold growth can occur within 24 hours of a water damage occurrence," says Michael. "Mold growth often cannot be seen by the naked eye but can spread rapidly through your home from your HVAC system and vents."

So now the question becomes what can homeowners do about the standing water they find in their home? Moisture meters can be bought at local hardware stores such as Home Depot starting around $40. However, "the issue with moisture meters is that you need to know exactly where the leak is to detect the moisture," says Michael. "Since roof leaks are an illogical flood, it's difficult to pinpoint the exact location of the leak and the path the water took. That is why we use infrared cameras which take a panoramic photo in the home to detect all the spots of moisture, ensuring that we do not miss any water damaged areas."
