TOWAMENCIN — Extreme winter weather has caused burst pipes at Towamencin's municipal building. Late on Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 22, fire sprinkler and potable water pipes burst in three sections of the municipal complex, near the public meeting hall, Township Manager Rob Ford said on Jan. 23. "It was a good thing that it happened while we were still here. If it had happened during the night, it would've been a lot worse," Ford said. The burst pipes are believed to have been caused by extreme cold temperatures since late Sunday, Jan. 20, Ford said. Staff were inside the public meeting room portion of the administration building preparing for a meeting when they first noticed a problem in a classroom just across the hall. "There was a significant dripping, and within probably ten minutes, it got a lot worse. What we eventually discovered was that it was the fire sprinkler pipe that broke first," Ford said. PORTSMOUTH�- Flooding in City Hall Sunday, attributed to a burst pipe, soaked the IT room at police headquarters and insurance adjusters Monday were sill inspecting damage throughout the building, city officials said. Police Chief Robert Merner said walls, ceiling and carpet in the police IT area were affected by the water leak, so two of his IT employees went to work Sunday night to relocate police IT operations. He said the employees moved computers and other equipment to the police training room and have been operating from there since. Merner said it's fortunate the Police Department is a round-the-clock operation because when the flooding started in the IT area on Sunday morning, it was noticed quickly. He said desks and computers were moved to the training area and firefighters put tarps over other office equipment shortly after it started in that area.
