Mold and water damage in your home? There are critical steps to take to prevent further issues. - WRAL.com
Whether your home has a small water leak or you experience an all out flood, you need to move quickly to avoid bigger issues.
Consumer Reports said that mold can show up in 24 to 48 hours. Based on the number of complaints received by 5 On Your Side, it's a constant battle for so many.
With larger rooms that were soaked, warding off mold may require professional help with special drying equipment.

But for smaller issues, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said people can usually deal with the mold themselves.
Start by clearing out the space as soon as it's safe. Then, remove anything porous that can't be thoroughly cleaned and dried, such as carpet, upholstery, drywall, insulation and ceiling tiles.
Try drying out the room by opening windows and using fans.

Then, close the room and use a dehumidifier, which can remove a significant amount of moisture.
Scrub the surfaces with detergent and water. If that doesn't work, Consumer Reports said to use some bleach — one cup per gallon of water.
But, the EPA cautions that people doing the work should wear long pants, sleeves, gloves, goggles and an N95 respirator for protection.
Beware, getting rid of extensive mold and water damage and the source of it might take more effort that you think.
