Fifty years ago, Congress voted to override President Richard Nixon's veto of the Clean Water Act. It has proved to be one of the most transformative environmental laws ever enacted. At the time of the law's passage, hundreds of millions of gallons of raw sewage was dumped by New York City into the Hudson River every day. This filth was compounded by industrial contaminants emptied into the river along much of its length. The catch basin for all of this was New York Harbor, which resembled an open sewer. At its worst, 10 feet of raw human waste blanketed portions of the harbor bottom, and certain reaches held little or no oxygen to sustain the life of its fishery. Trash floated among oil slicks. Health advisories against eating fish from the Hudson remain, but its ecology has largely recovered, thanks to the law, which imposed strict regulations on what could be discharged into the water by sewage treatment plants, factories and other sources of pollution. As temperatures slowly climb after freezing cold temperatures, some Valley schools dealing with water damage from burst pipes. Newton Falls interim Superintendent Justin Christopher issued a letter to the community detailing the extent of damage there. He said 90 percent of the high school wing had two to three inches of water. Significant water damage was observed in two classrooms, the high school offices, and the high school gym floor. Minor water damage was reported in the north wing of the high school. Christopher said it was determined that high winds in the range of 60 to 70 mph blew open the windows in the front of the high school building, causing the sprinkler pipe to freeze over and burst. The damage likely occurred Dec. 24 over Christmas break. After discovering the flooding, the Newton Falls Joint Fire District arrived to turn off the water to the building. 2 Bloomington families displaced by duplex fire - WGLT

Bloomington fire crews say a duplex is unlivable after fire heavily damaged the home Tuesday afternoon. Frank Friend, Bloomington Fire Department public information officer, said two families, including five adults and 13 children, were displaced by the fire at 1017 W. Monroe St. Crews were called to the home shortly after 1 p.m. Friend said crews found heavy smoke and high heat in the basement, where the fire was contained. The first and second floors sustained smoke and water damage, according to Friend. No injuries were reported. The cause is under investigation. "This could have been a very different outcome if this were to happen in the middle of the night. Close your doors at night," Friend said in a news release.
