Image
Al Lawrence  |  Special to the Mansfield News Journal The Richland County commissioners are giving a boost to a local company that helps people recover from their worst days. The board voted at its meeting on Tuesday to approve an application for an enterprise zone tax abatement that will provide a 50% property tax reduction for 10 years on a major addition to Shambaugh Cleaning and Restoration on Home Road in Ontario. The proposed abatement is for a 4,800-square-foot building that will cost an estimated $500,000 and create another line for the company's cleaning and restoration service. As part of the agreement, the company is planning to create 15 to 20 more jobs over the next three years. The company currently employs 35 people. CEO and President Jeremy Shambaugh told commissioners that the company serves 19 counties and already has outgrown the facility it moved into a little over one year ago. Image
YARMOUTH — Thirty families have been temporarily put out of their homes at Yarmouth Commons, a Route 28 housing complex, following what authorities said was a kitchen fire on Saturday. On Wednesday, volunteers from the American Red Cross said they were shutting down a shelter at the Mattacheese Middle School that they had opened following the fire. Nobody from the apartment complex had come needing to stay overnight. They added all residents they had contacted after the fire said they had other places they could stay. At the site of the fire, damage appeared minimal on Wednesday. Two windows on the third floor were boarded up, but otherwise no exterior damage was apparent. Signs posted on windows said "do not enter" and "trespassers will be arrested." The fire started in apartment seven in Building 2 at 881 Route 28 on the corner of Ocean Avenue. The property was once home to the Cavalier Hotel but now has the three new buildings, with about 30 units each. Approxima...

Several reviewers say they just throw theirs right in the washing machine to clean it! They also make a smaller one designed for the bikini area and a long, narrow back scrubber for hard-to-reach areas.  Promising review: "BEST PURCHASE OF MY LIFE. I'm SO excited about these mitts. I have KP on my arms and legs, so exfoliating is extra important for me. I also tend to need to exfoliate more often than the average person, but I never feel like any scrub or brush does enough. These are PERFECT. I followed all of the instructions and the dead skin was just rolling right off, and it felt so nice! I swear this is the cleanest I've felt in my entire life, and after only one use my skin is more glowy and smooth than it's been in years. I don't think I can live without these now." —bun Promising review:  "I'll be honest; I thought this would be another thing I saw on Amazon via TikTok that was way overhyped. I hav...

Image
Photo: istockphoto.com Q: As I was getting ready to take a shower, I looked up and noticed black splotches on my bathroom ceiling. What causes mold on bathroom ceiling surfaces, and what can I do to get rid of mold on the ceiling ? A: Mold can grow on a ceiling for a number of reasons, including excess humidity and liquid moisture. It's common to find mold on the ceiling in a bathroom when the warm, moist air of the shower or bathtub comes into contact with the cooler ceiling material. This causes condensation and can lead to mold and mildew growth. What does mold look like on ceiling surfaces? Mold commonly appears as small circles and circular patches, but it can grow in irregularly shaped patches as well. Before tackling mold removal, it's important to know what type of mold is growing and how to remove it properly. Cleaning mold from bathroom ceilings should be done as quickly as possible to prevent it from growing and spreading. Once the bathroom ceiling mildew is remove...

Ambience videos pair relaxing soundscapes with animated scenery to make viewers feel immersed in specific spaces, like a cozy library. They're big with "Harry Potter" fans. Picture this: You're in the Hogwarts library. Rain falls outside, a fire crackles across the room, and somewhere offscreen, quills scribble on parchment. You might look up from time to time to see a book drifting through the air or stepladders moving around on their own. Or maybe, you'll feel so relaxed, you nod off to sleep. Welcome to the world of so-called ambience videos, a genre of YouTube video that pairs relaxing soundscapes with animated scenery in order to make viewers feel immersed in specific spaces, like a jazz bar in Paris or a swamp populated with trilling wildlife. They are part of a long tradition of audiovisual products and programming designed to make a space feel a little more relaxing, a little nicer. Consider the black-and-white footage of a crackling yule log that the New ...

Restoration of barn, farm cause for celebration - Farm Progress

Image
Wander here and there throughout the U.S., and you will find barns. Big barns. Little barns. Red barns. Grey barns. Wood barns. Stone barns. The true barn aficionado will say with a grin, "I never met a barn I didn't like." Every heritage barn has a story, and when you come across especially grand barns, the story will likely include the part about the original owner having first made his money some way other than farming — lumbering, mining, shipping — before giving farming a try. Or, the barns may have been built as part of research operations, state institution farms or educational campuses, such as the Agricultural College of the State of Michigan (1855), which became Michigan State University. Regretfully, most of these extraordinary barns are gone, but those that remain are cause for celebration and preservation. Such is the case in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan where "when pine was king," the Kirby Carpenter Lumber Co. of Menominee, Mich., bought and ha...
