Volunteers with Terry's Giveback Organization clean up and hand out free meals to the homeless - WBIR.com

Image
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Volunteers handed out free meals and cleaned up an area under the bridge near Broadway as a way to give back to the homeless.  Dominique Terry, the founder of Terry's Giveback Organization, said he holds this event every year providing free food and haircuts. He also said his group gave out more than 250 meals and filled over 20 bags of trash. Terry said the idea came from his mom, who thought a clean-up event in the area might help with the stigma of uncleanliness around people who are homeless.  "This could not have been done without the help of the community," the organization said.  Terry's Giveback Organization has been helping hundreds of people in Knoxville since 2018.

Desert Star theater remains closed from water damage after apartment fire - FOX 13 News Utah

Image
MURRAY, Utah — Michael Todd, the president and owner of Desert Star Playhouse in Murray, was in his office in the Desert Star building Friday night when the sound of a fire alarm pierced his ears. In the moments following, he and about 250 guests and additional employees were evacuated as the fire department arrived. "It's a mixed-use building. There are apartments above Desert Star, and one apartment caught fire last night and the fire sprinklers in the building went off," Todd recalled. "All that water came out and went right through the floor and right into Desert Star." Todd says the water damage is extensive, damaging the historic wooden floors where audience chairs sit and the ceiling above. Saturday morning, Todd and the clean-up crews were on scene evaluating the extent of the damage. "There's quite a bit of water damage that needs to be repaired or replaced before we can reopen," Todd said. It's rare for the Desert Star...

People think that it's the roof leaking': Experts voice concerns over growing reports of attic rain - CBC.ca

Image
Cody Sager and his colleagues have answered more than 30 distress calls over the past week from concerned Calgary residents. The roofing technician, who works with Calgary Elite Roofing, says his team has been repeatedly dealing with complaints over what appears to be attic rain, a phenomenon that is often observed when the weather gets warmer after a cold spell. "When it goes from –30 [or] –40 to plus five [degrees] in two days, that's when the issue presents itself and it will start by a small drip or some staining," Sager said. "It could [even] be pouring water into the basement through the walls." The issue can show up in several areas of the house, including ceilings, light fixtures and walls. The culprit? Excess humidity. "People think that it's the roof leaking. They don't understand that it's a condensation issue," Sager said before adding, "anytime it goes below –15 and stays there for a period of ti...

Image
Dec 22, 2023, 5:09pm Updated on Dec 22, 2023 Tenants at an apartment building along Martin Luther King Boulevard in Newark are being forced to evacuate their homes just before the holiday weekend begins The order to get out came about after a leaking pipe flooded an apartment on the top floor. The damage then spread throughout the building, which is located at 737 MLK Boulevard. At 2 a.m. on Thursday, the water caused a ceiling collapse within a fourth-floor apartment. It destroyed the unit and sent water down to those on the first floor. Kevin Bennett lives in a first-floor apartment. The water that trickled down cut off his electricity. "It's a disaster, everything got ruined right before the holidays," he said. "I'm supposed to be looking for an apartment today because you can't do it over the weekend. Monday is a holiday." The flooding first took place in the fourth-floor apartment where Dominique Smith was living. She said that in the midd...

Why Are Vision and Dental Insurance Separate? - Investopedia

Image
Insurers bundle many health care services under a more comprehensive health plan, but vision and dental insurance are typically sold separately. That may seem odd, but the history of healthcare and current regulations and economics help explain why. Let's look in more detail at why vision and dental are separate. Health insurance companies do not offer vision and dental as a core plan benefit. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) excludes adult vision and dental as one of the 10 essential health benefits that health plans must provide. Excluding vision and dental helps health insurance companies keep premiums low. With separate vision and dental plans, you have more flexibility when choosing plans.  Reason 1: Medical, Vision, and Dental Care are Separate Fields Dental and vision care have always been separate from medical care. Going back in history, barbers, not doctors, took care of teeth extractions. They were similar to general practitioners, of...

The Lucrative Side of Drain Cleaning | Contractor - Contractor Magazine

Image
This is another example of the synergy that is building between drain cleaning services and pipe repair. "Because there is a tremendous amount of fresh water leaking into the sewage treatment system, the Environmental Protection Agency has recommended that plumbers repair or replace all leaky pipes. This will lead to a trillion-dollar opportunity for the industry over the next 20 years," says Dunbar. And speaking of COVID. Remember the great toilet paper shortage? "During the COVID-19 crisis, toilet paper was often unavailable for long stretches. During that time, people used whatever was available. These substitutes contributed to an increased number of drains being clogged," says Dunbar. And yes, flushable wipes will continue to generate business for professional drain cleaners and plumbers. Couple that with the fact that over the past several years municipal codes have been enacted that require the use of low volume flush toilets, we have our perfect storm, so to...

How Much Does Mold Removal or Mold Remediation Cost? (2024) - Bob Vila

Image
Photo: bobvila.com Highlights The typical cost range for mold remediation is $1,125 to $3,439, and the national average cost is $2,254. The exact cost for mold remediation services will depend on the location of the mold within the home, the type of mold present, the size of the problem, and the cost of labor. A homeowner will want to call a mold remediation professional if they notice signs of mold, such as a musty smell or suspicious growth on walls following water damage. While homeowners may be able to tackle very small areas of mold on their own, it's generally recommended that they hire a professional for mold remediation because of the health hazards it presents. Mold is one of a homeowner's worst nightmares. The hidden nature of the problem, the potential danger of inhaling mold spores, and the unknown factors and expense of removal combine to make mold a very serious problem. There are many elements that affect the overall cost of removal, including the location and ty...
