Frozen pipes destroy Fayetteville home | WSTM - CNYcentral.com

As the temperatures drastically decrease , the risk of your pipes freezing and bursting increases, and one family is Fayetteville is now facing hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage.

"Wow! So, what are we looking at right here? What happened here?" said Dan Messineo.

"This is a direct result of frozen pipes," said Alan Diamond, owner of Trade-Mark Restoration.

Diamond's company has been tasked with cleaning up the mess and restoring the home where pipes froze and burst.

"This is a pretty substantial loss," said Diamond. "Initial walk through. There was approximately six inches of water in the basement."

The homeowner has not even moved in yet.

"Once this place warms up, we re-establish heat, it's going to look a lot worse. It's going to have a whole new look," said Diamond.

"Because right now, it's frozen," said Messineo.

"It's in a frozen state," said Diamond.

Burst pipes are one of the most common causes of property damage in cold weather and can cause thousands of dollars in water damage

The worst part of this case is that two AA batteries in the thermostat are the culprit.

"It's on auto and the heat was on. It was working. It was functional. That battery went out," said Diamond. "Two double AA batteries caused several hundred thousand dollars in repair."

Once the thermostat died, the inside temperature plunged, and the pipes froze and then burst.

"Crucial to check your thermostat battery. Battery goes dead, thermostat stops functioning. That's the root of all evil in this particular project," said Diamond.

Most of the wood floors will have to be replaced, the kitchen cabinets and even much of the drywall.

Diamond said that is probably just the beginning.

Diamond said a few simple moves can help keep your from this destruction.

"If you're going to be a way for a short period of time, keep your faucets dripping. Maybe raise your heat slightly," said Diamond.

He said, if homeowners are going to be gone for a long time, they should have someone periodically check on the house.
