Melting snow causes damage at city hall | News - Danville Commercial News

DANVILLE – City hall suffered damage during the weekend with the melting snow.
Drains on top of the Robert E. Jones Municipal Building, 17 W. Main St., “couldn’t handle it all,” said Interim Public Works Director Carl Carpenter of the “massive” amount of water.
“We’re addressing that issue,” Carpenter added.
He said it appears snow melted so quick it overflowed the pipe. The precipitation normally works its way out of two small roof drains.
Water entered the building on the second floor.
“We got a lot of wet carpet, wet desks and paperwork,” Carpenter said.
Carpenter said Newton’s Cleaning and Restoration helped dry out and clean up the areas. Affected was the city’s second floor legal department and also underneath it on the first floor, Vermilion Advantage.
A message from Vermilion Advantage stated Monday, “due to the melting snow this weekend, the City of Danville building has experienced roof flooding. The Vermilion Advantage office has sustained substantial damage. We are assessing our losses and contacting insurance providers today. Our phones are offline today due to the fans used for drying. Please contact us via email.”
Carpenter reports melting snow hasn’t caused problems elsewhere in the city.
He said creeks and other drains are doing fine. He also hadn’t heard of sewer calls.
