Two things to do when repairing flood damaged homes - WVLT.TV

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - Susan Baskerville is thankful for good neighbors who helped minimize her flood damage when she was out of town during East Tennessee's torrential weekend rains.

"I have a Ring spotlight, and it kept going off because it was raining so hard. So I logged on and I noticed my backyard was flooding," said Baskerville. The neighbors brought a sump pump to start getting water down her French drains and out off her patio.

The effort kept water from destroying the walls of her home. But there was just enough intrusion to buckle her wood floors. Now a restoration crew is removing the floors and the next layer of wood beneath them.
She used a recommendation from someone she knew to call the Paul Davis crew in Knoxville.

"They'll do the microbial and the demo of everything and hopefully they'll be back to normal in a month maybe," said Baskerville.

She and neighbors did many of the things that Dan Mitchell says homeowners should try after a flood. Mitchell is a spokesperson for the Home Builders Association of Greater Knoxville. He stressed that drying things out first is critically important. "So a small dehumidifer, something you'd buy at one of your hardware stores. Something that you would purchase and go ahead and place inside there. That way you can get all the moisture out as quickly as possible."

Mitchell said then every permeable building material needs to come out of the home. "Obviously the issue isn't just the moisture, But as long as the moisture's staying in there, it promotes a mold growth as well, which is obviously hazardous to people's health." He said even an inch of water on drywall can ruin the entire board.

Dylan Anderson with Paul Davis tested with a moisture meter to determine that the walls were dry. He said, "She is very fortunate.But if it did come down to that case where it did touch her walls, then we would have to remove that." Anderson said it takes only 72 hours for microbial growth to begin after a flood.

Mitchell said homeowners should ask several things for hiring a contractor for a post-flood home repair. "One, you need to find out if they're a professional in that particular field. You've got to verify that this is something they've done in the past and have experience with.
Second, what you want to make sure is they're licensed for the work that they're getting ready to do. The other thing you need to ask for is a copy of their workman's comp and their liability insurance. You also want to see their business license as well."

Long flood cleanup anticipated after record-breaking rainfall - WJHL-TV News Channel 11

JOHNSON CITY (WJHL) - Home and business owners are tasked with damage assessment and cleanup following record-breaking rainfall that caused flash-flooding across the region. 

American Red Cross volunteers began damage assessment Monday but Northeast Tennessee Executive Director Kalen Collins said it's too soon to tell how long the cleanup effort will take. 

"Since I've been here this is definitely our most significant response in Northeast Tennessee because there are a lot of affected areas," said Collins. 

Collins said Washington County was the worst impacted, notably the Carmel Village area where some neighbors needed to be rescued on a raft over the weekend. 

It's these waist-high waters that landed a family of nine in an American Red Cross Shelter at University Parkway Baptist Church in Washington County. 

Becky Perkey said she was forced to leave her Huffine Road home in a hurry, grabbing her purse and forgetting her diabetes medication. 

"My car is covered in water," said Perkey. "I've lived there three years and I'm telling you this is the worst I've seen it. That water is so deep that when I stepped off my porch it was up to my ribs." 

The wait to get home could be weeks, according to Perkey. 

BrightRidge said they cannot restore power to much of the neighborhood due to continued flooding.

The utility has yet to come out with a repair timeline. 

Meanwhile, water restoration companies can't begin to get rid of water in some areas until levels stop rising. 

"The fact is we can't extract it as quick as its coming in, we have to wait until the water table recedes," said Spotless Carpet Cleaners President Bob Pakrul. 

Pakrul said they've gotten hundreds of calls from homes and businesses across the region and they're already in the process of responding to dozens. 

"It's been an exceptionally heavy volume of customers. There is somewhat of a waiting list," said Pakrul, "We are instructing people how to help themselves and then we can come in and help them place equipment."
