Schlenker’s owner restores Howard’s Feed Store building for separate business - MLive.com Posted: 31 Oct 2019 08:55 AM PDT ![]() JACKSON, MI – Nicholas Fuller made trips with his parents to downtown Jackson's Howard's Feed Store as a child, buying rabbits and ducks at Easter time and coming back later for feed. Now, Fuller owns the building. The downtown Jackson business closed in 2014, serving the community for more than 80 years. After sitting vacant for almost five years, Fuller bought the 5,000-square-foot space for $112,500, per city records. Fuller owns two franchises – Chem-Dry and Delta Restoration Services – and has moved them into the old Howard's building at 206 W. Louis Glick Highway. "It was iconic, but it was kind of an eyesore at the same token," Fuller said, noting the building had started deteriorating. The red-and-white colors and famous paintings on the exterior of cats and dogs are gone, as Fuller has renovated it with metal siding and stone. He moved Chem-Dry and Delta to the space earlier this month from a building half the size near Napoleon. Fuller also bought Schlenker's Sandwich Shop in 2018 – the famous burger joint in Jackson open since 1927. He's expanded to eight employees at Schlenker's and is proud to now own two buildings special to Jacksonians. Chem-Dry does carpet and upholstery cleaning, as well as commercial and residential carpet and tile cleaning – among other services. Delta is a restoration cleanup company that cleans up after fires, water damage or mold and guarantees to respond to emergencies within two hours, day or night. The two franchises are owned by a larger company. Fuller has expanded to 10 employees between the two businesses, and expects more traffic with the new, more-visible location. A new feature Fuller is adding in the next two to three months is an ozone room. Machines are set up in an enclosed space and is used on materials after a fire. "We can take any smoke damaged upholstery or clothes, bring them here, put them in that machine in that room so it will take the smoke smell out of them," Fuller said. While a lot has changed in Jackson since Fuller was a kid picking out ducks and rabbits, he's excited to see the progress. "Jackson is growing. It's a cool town," Fuller said. "I grew up here. That's what made me buy here." |
