Neumann honors friends, family of Brendan Kelly for 30 years of scholarships - The Delaware County Daily Times

ASTON– Neumann University honored the legacy of deceased alumnus Brendan Kelly, whose family and friends have worked for more than three decades to keep his memory alive on campus.

Members of the Brendan P. Kelly '87 Committee and the Kelly family were recognized Nov. 18 at the President's Thanksgiving Reception, Neumann's annual event that salutes supporters for their continued generosity and commitment to the university.

Brendan Kelly, a member of the Neumann University class of 1987, died in December 1988. Two years after his death, his friends and family launched the Brendan P. Kelly '87 Memorial Scholarship with the blessing of Sharon Kelly, Brendan's mother. In the past 31 years, the fund has grown to more than $425,000 and has supported 90 Neumann students.

According to Dr. Chris Domes, Neumann's president, "Fundraising in Brendan's name began after his passing with grassroots efforts, including basketball tournaments, beef and beers, personal donations, t-shirt sales, golf outings, and social events to cement Brendan's legacy in an institution that embraced him wholeheartedly."

Conner Kolek, senior marketing major and a recipient of the Kelly Scholarship, spoke to the crowd about what the financial assistance has meant to him.

"This scholarship, along with working jobs throughout my college experience, has made it possible for me to graduate with no student loans," Kolek said, eliciting enthusiastic applause from the crowd. "I am so grateful to the Kelly family and the Brendan P. Kelly Scholarship Committee for this humbling award. My college career would not have been the same without you."

Delloso announces $50G grant for storm water, Muckinipates Creek improvements

State Rep. David Delloso, D-162 of Ridley Park, recently announced a $50,000 grant has been awarded to Glenolden Borough for a storm sewer pipe project.

Delloso says the funds will go to redirecting storm water into a bioswale and a 400-foot streambank in Glenolden Community Park. The project would improve the land and aquatic habitats along the Muckinipates Creek while also reconnecting the creek to the floodplain.

The grant is being awarded through the Commonwealth Financing Authority's Watershed Restoration Protection Program – part of the CFA Act 13 grant programs – which provides funding to projects aiming to improve water quality, greenways and recreational areas. To reach Delloso's office, 605 E. Chester Pike, Ridley Park, call 610-534-1002. Delloso will hold a holiday open house at his office, 2:30-4:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2. Everyone is welcome.

Page brothers art exhibition begins at Swarthmore Borough Hall

An exhibition of photography and verse by brothers Paul Page, a photographer and David Page, an author, will be on display from Thursday, Dec. 2, to Sunday, Jan. 2, at Swarthmore Borough Hall, 121 Park Ave., Swarthmore. The public is invited to the opening reception on Friday, Dec. 3 from 6-8 p.m.  The exhibit and the reception are free and open to the public.

This project has been a creative collaboration between the two brothers, an exploration of light, image, and possibilities filtered through a photographic lens and a keyboard. Meaning often hides much deeper than mere observation, and the questions the images pose, the answers the verses provide, are but one facet of a complex tale.

Exhibit hours are Monday to Thursday, 9 a.m.- 8 p.m.; Friday, 10 a.m. – 7 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.; and Sunday, 1 – 5 p.m.

Swarthmore Friends of the Arts is the community group responsible for the rotating art exhibits at Swarthmore Borough Hall. For information about Swarthmore Friends of the Arts, visit http://www.swarthmorearts.org/.

"These gift cards are one of many ways CCCS supports our school community," said Dr. David Clark Jr, CEO of Chester Community Charter School. With more than 90% of CCCS students coming from low-income families, CCCS hopes that its support for this initiative will make it easier for families to celebrate Thanksgiving Day and brighten the start of the holiday season.
